Movie Motivation

Some of the best travel quotes I’ve heard over the years have come from movies. Even if the character is discussing a certain location, city, cultural cuisine etc, I get excited at the prospect of one day discovering the very things they were talking about in the films. This page is dedicated to all things related to travel, as said by my favorite movie characters. I hope to find new quotes every week to add to my growing repertoire of knowledge learned through film. Enjoy!

Movie: Up in the Air (2009)

Character: Ryan Bingham (George Clooney)

“How much does your life weigh? Imagine for a second that you’re carrying a backpack. I want you to pack it with all the stuff that you have in your life… you start with the little things. The shelves, the drawers, the knickknacks, then you start adding larger stuff. Clothes, tabletop appliances, lamps, your TV… the backpack should be getting pretty heavy now. You go bigger. Your couch, your car, your home… I want you to stuff it all into that backpack. Now I want you to fill it with people. Start with casual acquaintances, friends of friends, folks around the office… and then you move into the people you trust with your most intimate secrets. Your brothers, your sisters, your children, your parents and finally your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. You get them into that backpack, feel the weight of that bag. Make no mistake your relationships are the heaviest components in your life. All those negotiations and arguments and secrets, the compromises. The slower we move the faster we die.”

Movie: The Beach (2000)

Character: Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio)

“Trust me, it’s paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed. For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven’t tried before. So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It’s probably worth it.”

Movie: Elizabethtown (2005)

Character: Claire Colburn (Kirsten Dunst)

“To have never taken a solitary road trip across country? I mean everybody’s got to take a road trip at least once in their lives. Just you and some music.”

Movie: The Holiday

Character: Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz)

“I need to get out of town. You know, I think I need some peace and quiet… or whatever it is people go away for. You know what I really want to do? I want to eat carbs without wanting to kill myself. You know, I want to read a book! Not just a magazine, an actual book.”

  1. How about this one from Leonardo Dicaprio in The Beach: “Trust me, it’s paradise.
