Monday Motivation & the Power of Mantras

So, there’s this habit I have. It’s a half habit of sorts that’s itching to find a permanent home in me like the tattoos that adorn my body. The only thing holding me back is this element of fear each time I try to fully commit to it.

I have the habit of reading productivity and success articles and then not incorporating any of the suggestions into my own life. Advice like doing morning meditations, keeping a gratitude journal, and waking up in the early hours of the morning to write simply exist as fleeting thoughts in my mind. I’d love to be able to turn these thoughts into actions, but there’s this heavy ball of fear and doubt that rolls around in my head and convinces me that these habits won’t work for me.

I think we all have this fear when we’re about to start something new. Whether it’s a sport, a new position at work, or a hobby, there’s just something so difficult about the act of getting started. And it all comes down to making the decision to do just that.

Decide to set foot outside and go for a run. Decide to write that blog post you’ve been mulling around in your head for two weeks. Decide to ask for that person’s number.

So, today I’ve decided to put one nugget of productivity advice into practice with the hope that it becomes a habit. Today, I will begin incorporating mantras into my daily routine to start building this habit and to swallow a strong dose of Monday motivation.

Why mantras? Well, I figured this would be a simple enough habit to form as it only entails the recitation of a phrase that will inspire you to tackle whatever the day throws at you. Wellness experts have long talked about mantras as being linked to mindfulness, and the benefits of beginning such a practice include productivity, optimism, and inner peace.

I read an article (cue the half habit) that listed 12 morning mantras of wellness it-girls and thought that if they can do it, then I certainly can too.

After reading a powerful quote on a Rochester, NY mural I discovered for the first time yesterday, I realized I had found the right mantra for me.

“I am she whom drives the jackals from you while you sleep.”

I also think part of the fun in discovering quotes that speak to you in some way is realizing that everyone has their own interpretation of what it means. So, I’ll leave it to you to find your own meaning in the quote like I have.

Maybe you too can use it for your daily mantra. Wish me luck in finally turning my half habit into a full-blown one.
