Shameless: Why you should be as obsessed with the music as you are the show

This past summer while I was working part-time and simultaneously searching for a full-time job, I delved into the world of Netflix. My life was at a stand-still, and I took a break from reality by giving my full attention to what feels like any and every tv show the streaming platform has to offer. I finished watching Friday Night Lights, dabbled in a few episodes of Friends, and binge-watched Orange is the New Black before I even had a chance to read a spoiler tweet.

But, if there’s one show that I absolutely can’t get enough of, it’s ShamelessStarring William H. Macy as a neglectful father to his six children in the slums of Chicago, he leaves the paternal duties to his eldest daughter Fiona, played by Emmy Rossum. The situations that arise in the show are such train wrecks that you can’t look away. Season 7 has recently begun, and I highly suggest tuning in if you haven’t already.

These bizarre situations the characters get themselves into are often highlighted with unforgettable songs whose lyrics tend to perfectly reflect the characters’ actions. These days, I often find myself watching tv shows in the hopes of discovering new music, the very same music I can turn to if I ever (God forbid) find myself facing a similar life moment.

So, do yourself a favor and check out Shameless. Appreciate all that the characters go through while you also pay attention to the strum of the guitars, the pounding of the bass, the dulcet notes of the piano.

Who knows? Maybe your next favorite song will come through your television/laptop speakers.

As you watch, listen for the following songs that have quickly become my favorites. You could even follow the Spotify playlist I created if you feel so inclined 🙂
