“Most women at one time or another have faked it.”
“Well, they haven’t faked it with me.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I know.”
“Oh. Right. That’s right. I forgot. You’re a man.”
Who could forget this famous exchange between characters Sally Albright and Harry Burns as they ate at Katz’s Deli in New York City? Since the 1989 release of the movie When Harry Met Sally, Katz’s Delicatessen has become a popular eatery in New York City, serving one of the world’s best pastrami sandwiches as customers strive to sit at the table Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal once dined at.
Katz’s is so well-known that Meg and Billy aren’t the only two celebrities who have dined at the deli. Other famous stars including Dan Aykroyd, Barbra Streisand, and Bruce Willis have made their way to East Houston Street to enjoy the deli’s menu selections. If there’s any place you should go to experience a classic New York City restaurant, it’s Katz’s Deli; the restaurant has been in the same location since the early 1900s.
More often than not, I am drawn to travel destinations that have made their way into the movies. When I do visit these places, I try to find the exact spot where specific scenes of movies were filmed. Most recently, I made my way to Bethesda Terrace in New York City to stand in the spot where Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis exchanged dialogue in the 2011 film Friends With Benefits.
But today, a Time Magazine website article introduced me to the prank collective Improv Everywhere that recreates these famous movie scenes in New York City. The article talked about the collective’s most recent stint.
Improv Everywhere recreated the iconic When Harry Met Sally scene in Katz’s Delicatessen. Watch their reenactment below.
The Katz’s flash mob is part of the group’s latest series Movies in Real Life. Each Tuesday this fall, the collective releases a new video of members bringing iconic movie scenes to real life on the streets of New York. They have already reenacted scenes from movies that include Jurassic Park, Rocky, Harry Potter, and Back to the Future.
I have a feeling that Improv Everywhere’s website will quickly become one of my most-visited sites on the Internet. I will no longer spend my Tuesdays just enjoying the new music released on iTunes, but I will be watching the latest episode of Movies in Real Life. I’m excited to see what the prank collective will recreate next week.
I guess it’s time to plan a trip to Katz’s Delicatessen where the pastrami sandwich is a must-have and the phrase “I’ll have what she’s having” is an all-too-common occurrence.
