My Top 5 Road Trip Songs

It’s been over a month since I’ve been home, and the midterm break couldn’t come soon enough. This past week, I was antsy to get on the road and drive 2.5 hours back home. I love to travel, even if it does entail me being stuck in the car for hours at a time by myself. It had been a while since I put new songs on my iPod, so I figured I would stock up for the drive home. At this point in my life, my iPod has been a prominent part of my everyday travels in the car. I still haven’t switched over all my music to my iPhone, and I doubt I ever will. I hate parting with my technology, even if it is over 5 years old.

Yesterday, I was excited to get on the road, and I knew that I was in desperate need of some different music to keep me company. After a few hours, my iPod was charged and ready to go with new music for the drive home.

So, in honor of my recent travel adventure, no matter how brief it was, here are my current top 5 songs that I think should belong on every road trip playlist. Granted, this list changes weekly, so I’m sure in five days’ time, I’ll be dashboard-drumming to a different set of songs.

1. “Days of Gold” – Jake Owen

I grew up listening to country, I still listen to country, and some of my favorite concerts have been performed by country artists. As much as I like to deny it sometimes, country music will always be one of my favorite genres. This is Jake Owen’s most recent single, and it kept me awake in the car this morning.

2. “Borderlines and Aliens” – Grouplove

This song is off of Grouplove’s new album Spreading Rumours. I love the guitar riffs throughout the track, and I was definitely drumming my fingers on the steering wheel while it was playing. I first heard this on my college radio station, and I have yet to get sick of it. So naturally, I played it about fifteen times on the way home.

3. “Flash of Light” – Parade of Lights

I just discovered this band and can’t seem to get enough of them. This song makes me nostalgic for summer; I felt the sun and heat beating down on me as I let the wind from the rolled-down window mess my hair up during the drive. The saxophone solo in the middle of the song makes it even better. I drove away from campus and like the song states, I was gone in a “flash of light.”

4. “Best Day of My Life” – American Authors

I first heard this song in the movie trailer for Vince Vaughn’s recent film The Delivery Man, and I fell in love with it. It has the staple sound of indie film soundtracks, and I love finding music that was used in movies. It’s just a feel-good track that fit my mood as the miles flew by on the highway. Plus, the music video has just become one of my favorites.

5. “Ooh La La” – The Faces

This has been a favorite road trip song of mine since I first heard it in the 2004 movie Without a Paddle. The acoustic guitar strumming brings a sense of freedom on the open road and an excitement at the prospect of heading home. You also can’t go wrong with anything by Rod Stewart. Ever.

Please let me know if you have any song suggestions for a road trip playlist. I’m always looking for new music to keep me company in the car.
